Pony is a western obsessee who longs to be a hero like the ones he watches on the silver screen, but his fixation makes him a joke to nearly everyone around him — until he finds his damsel in distress in Frankie, a singer/dancer navigating life as a woman trapped in a man's body. When Frankie appears to lose her briefcase, Pony returns it to her, unaware that it was meant for the mafia as part of a drop-off job she'd hoped would fund her transition. Sent to retrieve it is Vinnie, a screw-up one misstep away from the mafia's wrath, and Pony's unwitting intervention sets off a string of unanticipated, unfortunate events.
Pop Kowboy pairs its light-hearted comedy with real emotional weight, particularly in Frankie's arc as a transwoman whose struggles resonate well beyond the film's farcical premise. Shawn Driscoll leads in his first starring role, opposite Craig Olsen, "General Hospital" regular Ronnie Marmo, and veteran television actor Ron Hunter as the crime boss whose scheme sets the plot in motion.
