Red Roses and Petrol

Enda Doyle records his final moments on tape, explaining his diagnosis — "a broken heart" — before he collapses and dies. What follows is a portrait of a family in mourning, told through each member's fractured relationship to the man they lost: his widow Moya, his resentful son Johnny, his sharp-tongued daughter Medbh, and his eldest, guilt-ridden Catherine.

Director Tamar Hoffs threads dark comedy through the grief without undercutting it — the film finds room for both a scene of ashes mistaken for cocaine and a devastating final image of a widow burning the one book her husband ever gave her. It's a story about how love doesn't resolve when someone dies; it just changes shape.
